The university offers programs of graduate study leading to 18 advanced degrees: master of accountancy, master of arts, master of business administration, master of architecture, master of landscape architecture, master of arts/science in education, master of engineering, master of engineering administration, master of fine arts, master of forestry, master of information systems, master of public affairs, master of science, master of urban affairs, master of urban and regional planning, doctor of education, and the doctor of philosophy. The university also offers the doctor of veterinary medicine (see Veterinary Medicine chapter in this catalog).
Admission to graduate school usually is contingent upon receipt of a B.S. or B.A. from an accredited college or university and the presentation of evidence of potential to pursue graduate work.
Scores on the Graduate Record Examination or comparable tests may be required to give information supplementary to the usual academic credentials. Where deficiencies in preparation exist, the student may be admitted but will be required to make up the deficiencies. The various admissions categories and requirements are explained in the Graduate Catalog. Applications for admission may be obtained from and submitted to the Graduate School, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061.
Seniors at this university who intend to receive the bachelor's degree, are within the last semester of graduation, and have a GPA of 3.0 or better may take graduate-level course work to satisfy advanced degree programs as dual registrants. The student must be admitted to Graduate School prior to taking courses toward the graduate degree and must indicate on the class ticket at registration the degree (graduate or undergraduate) to which a specific course applies. The fees for such dual registration shall be those charged full-time undergraduate students. Upon completing the requirements for the undergraduate degree, dual registrants may become regular graduate students. An application fee is required of all on-campus students.
Outstanding students also may take graduate courses for undergraduate credit upon written approval of the dean of the Graduate School and the appropriate department.
Graduate students must register on the specified registration days.
Credits cannot be earned during any semester for which the student is not registered. Credits for work taken during the summer terms is allowed on the same basis as work taken during the regular session.
